It is no secret that former President Donald Trump wants to run for the White House again. In fact, recent reports suggest he could officially launch his 2024 campaign as early as this month.
But would Trump be able to win the Republican Party's presidential primaries, and then go on to defeat President Joe Biden in the general election?
Even with Trump making his intentions clear, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has emerged as a potentially strong presidential contender, with many influential conservatives viewing him as the party's best option in 2024.
But conservative voters do not exactly feel that way, according to Newsweek, which reports that most polls suggest Trump would easily beat DeSantis in the GOP primaries.
For example, in a recent Emerson College poll, 56 percent of respondents said they would vote for Trump in the primaries, while just 20 percent said they would back DeSantis.
Similarly, a Yahoo News/YouGov poll put Trump 11 percentage points ahead of DeSantis.
Biden's approval rating has decreased significantly in recent months, and he is less popular than Trump was at this point of his presidency.
But would Trump be able to beat Biden, were they to face off in the 2024 general election?
According to Newsweek, most polls suggest the hypothetical race between Trump and Biden would be very close.
Of course, due to the electoral college system, even if he lost the popular vote -- like he did in 2016 -- Trump would still be able to win another term in the White House.
It would not be too surprising if Biden's approval rating continued to decrease, being that his popularity has primarily been damaged by issues such as inflation and high gas prices, according to Newsweek.
Additionally, most polls suggest Democrats will get clobbered in the upcoming midterm elections, with the GOP winning control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
It is unclear if Trump would be able to ride this likely upcoming red wave to the White House in 2024, but nothing suggests Biden's approval rating could recover anytime soon.
Even though Biden has repeatedly stressed that he intends to run for reelection, many Democratic insiders are skeptical.
In fact, some reports suggest liberal activists and donors are looking for an alternative to the 79-year-old incumbent, who they believe should step down on his own.
According to The New York Times, this has irked Biden and his allies, who believe the former Delaware senator is the party's best shot at stopping a Trump return in 2024.
